When you buy a new piece of hardware for your computer like a webcam, a printer, or a portable hard drive, it will probably be accompanied by a CD. This CD contains the Device driver, and you'll need to install it before your hardware can really work for you. Of course, not everything comes to us with the proper software - we may buy printers and webcams secondhand, and losing these discs is pretty common. You'll need to know how to find the best driver for your item in this event that you're missing it. Luckily, finding installing, and removing device software is very easy.

Device drivers are one of the main things which hold your computer together. Each driver is designed specifically for the product it is attached to, and without it, your operating system will not know how to use your hardware, whether it is a graphics card, or a printer.

Fortunately drivers are fairly easy to update, delete, and maintain, ensuring your computer works crash free, and at top speed. Keeping everything up to date and installing the correct software to begin with is very important in maintaining the stability of your computer. If you have out of date drivers, or have installed the wrong ones, it can cause regular errors in your operating system!

Installing a new driver is very simple in new operating systems. In most cases Windows will tell you when it detects a new device and find corresponding information online. Unfortunately Windows cannot always find the device driver for your product, if this happens you may need to find it manually.

Manually finding the device software is a piece of cake. In nearly all cases a product will come with a disk, this will contain a program to install the required software. To install these drivers simply insert the disk, and follow the onscreen instructions. When you plug in your device after this, it will find them straight away!

If you have lost the disk which came with your product, try searching for the drivers on the website owned by the device manufacturer. You will often be able to find your exact driver on the manufacturer’s website under the Support section. Make sure you have your product ID handy when you do this, otherwise you might download the wrong version!
Once you have installed your drivers, it is essential that you keep them up to date. You can find the latest versions on the manufacturer websites, and you can compare these with the versions on your Device manager to check that you have the latest versions.

The Device manager is a handy little tool which lists all the devices attached to your computer, lists any problems, and easily allows you to check your driver versions. To access the Device manager right click on My Computer, click properties and then click on Device Manager. This will take you to a simple list of devices. To find the device you need, simply click the plus symbol by your device location and choose the exact peripheral.

From here you can update the driver, roll back an update if it causes problems, temporarily disable it, or even delete it.

It is easy to delete a driver through the device manager, simply click the button, and confirm that it is ok to delete. Be very careful when doing this however; only delete device drivers of devices which you no longer have installed. If you delete a driver that is essential to the operating system, it could cause problems!
