It’s a reality from which nobody can escape: whatever you do, you need the internet. However, this is true to different degrees for those in business and for home users.
It’s easy to imagine how necessary the internet is for a business, no matter whether they’re a sole proprietor or a multi-national company. Businesses rely on advertising and selling, and for this there is no better tool than the internet. As a result, businesses require the most reliable connection. The phrase, “time is money” comes to mind, as certainly a period of any time without internet is horrible for business. If a customer has a bad experience with a business due to a fault in the internet connection it looks extremely unprofessional, even if it wasn’t the companies fault. It reflects poorly on them. Providing internet isn’t quite the same as getting it for a house. It’s not as if you go to a store and buy “internet,” and it’s simply an endless source of internet. There are lots of different connection speeds and different sized businesses require different amounts of bandwidth. Especially at big companies, every rank and file must be supplied with a reliable connection. Big companies look amateur when there’s an internet connection failure.
However necessary the internet may seem at home, and for however many things upon which we depend on it, we can live without it there. Missing it for hours, or even days, at a time is a great annoyance, but it doesn’t affect us the way it would a business. A fast connection is something we get out of desire. The needs of the connection change depending upon the residential density. Apartment buildings have more people using the internet per square kilometre than a residential area with big homes far apart from each other.
The other important aspect is customer service from the internet supplier. It’s similar to the previously mentioned connection issues in that it’s nice to have a personal, reliable contact with someone who can fix your connection or network in the event of a failure, but you can survive without it. In fact, you can get an internet connection for one by tethering with certain wireless devices with that capability. This help puts in perspective how much is lost when a connection fails at home, but in an office building with dozens, or even hundreds or thousands, of computers, there’s a lot more at stake. Businesses require guaranteed connection at the outset, and in the worst case scenario they need an instantaneous, thorough solution.
One thing businesses and homes need equally is a secure connection safe from hackers or anyone who might use their connectivity. Privacy concerns are essential. For businesses, there are records, and financial information that for obvious reasons is strictly confidential. Home internet users who buy things online with their credit cards have the same concern.
By and large, the internet is a required aspect for individuals and businesses even though their specific needs vary slightly.
